Reflection about my project

In the process of making my project, I did reflections when I finish one piece of work. I summarized some key decisions I made.

Regular metal dots / Irregular metal dots.

At the very beginning in the middle MA show I did both regular metal dots objects with pine resin leaf skeleton piece and irregular metal dots with leaves piece. At that time I got feedbacks from the viewers. I found most of them like the objects with the irregular metal dots after I asked why I got a useful answer. They told me when they look at the object with irregular metal dots they can play with them, because they want to use their eyes to highlight a shape constructed from metal dots so that they can keep their eyes on them for a long time. So I did a lot of objects with irregular metal dots in last module but I also think maybe I can also try regular metal dots on leaves pieces. So about this piece, at the beginning I only put regular metal dots, like a circle, and after finishing that I made a reflection I compared the regular metal dots object to other objects with irregular metal dots, I found the final vision was not what I had imaged, so after the comparison I found maybe I can try to combine irregular metal dots with regular metal dots, so that it can be another vision. I found in this way I can use the irregular metal dots to highlight the regular metal dots shape and in the meanwhile all these regular metal dots are hidden inside irregular metal dots.  So in this way viewers can play with it like I said before and they also can find a highlight shape in it.

Problem about the back of the brooch:

sand paper

Piercing patterns into the back metal plate of the brooches is a way to make the brooches lightness, but after I did that I also got some struggle. This is because the back of the leaf layers are not that much good, if I cut big shapes we can see the not good back of leaf layers. So in order to solve this problem I tried a lot and find a material sand paper. The features of sand papers are really suitable for my objects. This is because the back metal plate of the brooches in my objects close to black and the surface is a little bit matt. The sand paper’s colour is a little bit darker than the metal plate of brooches and also a little bit shinning, so about the back, I can get some highlights and lowlights. After that I also tried small shapes such as little dots holes. I tried to cut that kind of shapes is because I think the back of the brooches can also have a contrast to the front. I found if the holes are small enough I do not need to use sand paper, so I did one without sand paper. After that I did a reflection to compare objects with sand paper and objects without sand paper and I think both of them are worked. So I will keep both of them.

Critical thinking about the back of brooches

Most of my pieces are brooches, so I hope each pieces of brooches has its own details. So I think the front of the brooches and the back of the brooches can also have a contrast. After I made little round holes in the last piece, I try to consider about the touch felling. In the front leaves part, we can see metal dots flashing visually, so after thinking I made concave-convex combine with round holes. So the back of brooches have a kind of touch feeling and the back echoes the front.

Thickness of the edge of the brooch

In the previous moodle I made the edge of the brooch about 8mm thick, it was too thick, consider about the fragility about the leaves, I made it 6mm, but it was also a little bit thick, so in this final moodle, I tried 5mm. It is better than before, so I tried 3mm but it not worked, because when I cut 3mm thick the pieces of leaves are easy to drop, so I decided to keep 5mm thick and made it thin after filling the resin and pine resin.

New equipment I tried

Discover new possibilities in the creative process.

When I start to use leaf material I only use knife to cut it, as the thickness increases, knife is not suitable for my, and at that time I found I can cut with saw and the cross section is better than using knife. Using saw to cut simple shapes are good but for me it is not enough, because I also have a lot of complicated shapes. The first time when I using laser cutting, it does not worked, it will burn and the edges are black, and the most important thing it the laser cutting machine cannot cut through layers of leaves. So after that I made a reflection and find the reason, the leaves inside are not dry they are still wet, so after leaves dry I tried again, and it worked. Laser cut equipment is the main equipment I need to use. Basic on laser cutting machine I found the cut edges are clear, and several pieces of my objects are too clear, so I am thinking can I try to found another vision so that can make the texture not that much clear? I found sand plaster machine, this machine has really strong power, and it can shock leaf material. I did two pieces by using this machine, it can weaken the edges of the shapes and made the edges not that kind of clear. I think it also a useful try. Maybe in the further plan about my project I will try to find more possibilities about using this machine.

Curve shapes test

In the process of developing the work, I want to try different possibilities, so in this part I try to make leaves in curve shapes. So I drew a lot of sketches and made models by using cardboard. The cardboard models are quite nice, they are lightweight and lithe. But when I try to transfer it into leaves material, it cannot reach that kind of feeling, so at that time I need to think how to solve this problem. After thinking I decide to keep the curve shapes by using cardboard and that can be a part of my project. This is because all the parallel lines were drew by myself and I drew them really fast with my breath without any hesitate, so they are out of control but the lines are kind of alive. It is the reflection of my vitality. So the models part is also a part of the project. So I am making my jewellery objects and also keep on making cardboard models.

Where I can exhibit my jewellery objects?

Consider about the exhibition, I think my work can be exhibit in art jewellery gallery such as Marzee and schmuck. I have been there before when I am an undergraduate student. We had an academic communication there and exhibit our jewellery work there. I found in this contemporary jewellery gallery there are a lot of creative works, including unique materials, unique crafts and fascinating ideas. I think my organic material objects can also exhibit there and that could give me an opportunity to communicate with other jewellery artists and get professional suggests. Moreover basic on the organic material leaves I think I can also exhibit in collect shop in nature history museum. This is because in these kind of museum brings a lot of previous plants life for us, it is a place where new and old exist together.  My jewellery objects try to trace previous life. Exhibit there might have something interesting.

Talking about the audiences

People who love nature and people who want to slow down and enjoy life and also people who like thinking.

For example we drink water every day but if we are busy we will never notice that water also has sentient. But there do have a number of people enjoy thinking that and publish the book The Power of Waterhealing and discovering ourselves. So I think the audience might be this amount of people.
